Stanley Edward Smith and Joyce Doreen Burgess
My Dad was born in Mataura, Southland when his father was working in sawmill
near there. His Mother died not long after his first birthday and he then went and lived with his maternal grandparents
in Orepuki. Dad's first job was working for his brother David, at Otara, Eastern Southland in a grocery shop.
He also was in the Royal New Zealand Air Force as a pilot, he worked for the Railways, owned a grocery shop, worked at
the local freezing works. Both of my parents have a keen interest in Softball along with other interests - St John's
Ambulance, Lodge, Senior Citzens, playing bowls and the church.
My Mum was born in Invercargill lived at Kennington. Mum worked
in a grocery shop and various other shops in her working life. Mum's twin sister Joan, married Dad's brother, Walter -
so sisters married brothers and they spent a lot of time together. Both Mum and Dad come from large families.
So many childhood memories are of playing with other cousins. Like most women of her generation Mum sewed almost all
of her children's clothes and knitted a lot of jersery's. Mum and Dad live in a townhouse here in Invercargill
